Background information / Compatibility requirements
Details
The Doomadgee Water Treatment Plant (WTP) process consists of an elevated raw water tower, lamella clarifiers
with integrated dual media gravity filtration, chlorine disinfection and two (2) 2.0 ML Clear Water Reservoirs
(CWR). The original CWR was constructed circa 1984 and is of welded steel construction. The second CWR is of
reinforced concrete construction, installed in 2015. The original steel CWR shows significant corrosion both
externally & internally and is deemed to be at the end of its asset life. However, the Principal has requested the
steel reservoir to be retained and operated for a further number of years.
The Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers (DLGWV / the Department / Principal) is seeking to
ensure the reliable supply of drinking water to the Doomadgee community both now and in the future through
the construction of a new CWR, to be operated and maintained in addition to the existing steel and concrete
reservoirs (3 No. 2ML effective capacity per reservoir).
An Options Assessment was recently undertaken to determine the most suitable location, material and size of
the new reservoir. The outcomes of the options assessment recommended a like-for-like replacement with a new
2.0 ML glass fused to steel reservoir in the same location as existing. However, through discussions between the
Department and Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Council (DASC), it was determined that the existing steel reservoir
be retained, reducing the risk of water supply shortages during construction works and increasing the overall
treated water capacity (up to 6 ML effective capacity) and thus securing future water supply for the Doomadgee
community.
