On the 12th May 2016 Ashfield, Leichhardt and Marrickville councils were merged into a new council, known as the Inner West Council, by the NSW State Government under their reform program for councils. The proclamation from the NSW State Government carries over the codes, plans, strategies and policies of former councils, and makes them the codes, plans, strategies and policies of the new council. This is to ensure that the new council continues to have codes, plans, strategies and policies in place to guide its operation.

Council seeks expressions of interest from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artists for an artwork to form an Aboriginal Survival Memorial in Kendrick Park, Tempe. Please note there will be a site briefing at Kendrick Park at 11am, 13 November 2026.
