Business Info
Founded in 1865, Queensland Rail has a proud history of connecting Queensland communities and supporting local jobs, industries and economies. We are committed to providing a customer-focused, safe, modern and world-class rail service for Queenslanders.

With total assets of $8.0 billion, and a network that extends more than 6,600 kilometres across the state, we are also focused on providing customers and Queenslanders with an efficient and value for money service.

Our 7,500 strong workforce delivers services across our South East Queensland and Regional networks, including Travel and Tourism services and Regional Freight.

Our South East Queensland team provides 8,392 services each week, supporting our customers to reach their destination safely and on-time. In 2019-2020, 44 million passenger trips were taken on the South East Queensland network (a decrease of approximately 20 per cent compared to 2018-2019, associated with COVID-19).

The Regional networks commuter and rail tourism markets are serviced by the Travel and Tourism products. These comprise eight services connecting Regional communities across Queensland with other Regional centres and the South East Queensland corner. These services support the Queensland tourism industry through the provision of unique rail tourism experiences including special events and charters through the operation of a small fleet of heritage services.

Our Regional networks and Freight team provides rail access for freight operators and other Queensland Rail supply chain customers to enable the critical transport of resources and general freight across the state.

We are proud of the role we play in providing vital passenger and freight services and we are dedicated to ensuring that our systems, procedures and practices reflect the highest standards of corporate governance.

What the buyer is requesting
Details
This tender is seeking to engage a Principal Contractor to undertake the construction of the North Johnstone River Bridge Replacement project, which involves the construction of a new single track railway bridge over the North Johnstone River, approximately 4 km north of Innisfail on the North Coast Line (NCL) in Far North Queensland.

The existing bridge, located at approximately chainage 1597.870 km, has been in service for approximately 100 years and currently supports both passenger and freight rail operations. Due to age related deterioration, increasing maintenance demands and ongoing structural performance concerns, Queensland Rail has initiated the replacement of the existing structure to ensure the continued safe and reliable operation of the rail network.

The project has been developed as an offline bridge replacement to minimise disruption to rail operations during construction and to improve constructability and safety outcomes. The proposed works include significant enabling and temporary works to facilitate construction and demolition adjacent to a live operational railway and within a constrained river environment, construction of a new rail alignment offset approximately 17 m downstream of the existing bridge, construction of a new six-span prestressed concrete rail bridge, associated earthworks, drainage, rail infrastructure, rail maintenance access roads (RMAR), utility relocations, temporary works, demolition of the existing bridge structure, and reinstatement works.
