The City of Stonnington is a local government area located within the metropolitan area of Melbourne, Australia. It comprises the inner south-eastern suburbs, between 3 and 13 km (2 and 8 mi), from the Melbourne CBD. The city covers an area of 25.7 km2 (9.9 sq mi).

Within twenty years of the settlement of Melbourne in 1835, the Prahran Municipality (later City of Prahran) was formed in 1855, followed by the Gardiner Road Board (later City of Malvern) in 1856.

The late 19th century saw substantial residential and commercial development such that by 1891 Prahran had a population of almost 40,000 and Malvern 11,000. Following the election of the Kennett government in the Spring of 1992, as part of a comprehensive reorganisation of local government in Victoria, the Cities of Malvern and Prahran were amalgamated to form the City of Stonnington.

Council is looking to engage the Artistic Direction services of an individual or organisation with strong experience in the delivery of concert style operatic performances.

The Classics, Opera, Broadway, and Symphony comprised a long-running concert series. In recent years, program revisions have led to Opera becoming a standalone event held each February.

As a result, it is proposed that the next iteration revert to the original title: Opera in the Park.

Duties of this role will include but are not limited to:

- Creative programming including formation of operatic repertoire in keeping with the objectives of the event

- Submitting an artistic budget which includes the Artistic Director’s fee and the fees of all artists and any other creative staff

- Recruiting and working with a selection of artists (vocalists, musicians and MC) and any additional creative staff in consultation with the producers (City of Stonnington)

- Recruiting and liaising with a Stage Manager for the rehearsal period and performance

- Recruiting and liaising with Assistant Stage Manager/s (as required)

- Recruiting a Stage Designer who will liaise with Council’s Festivals and Events team and approved production suppliers to deliver a stage plan within budget

- Artistic Director and Stage Designer collaborating with Council’s appointed audio and lighting suppliers, under the supervision of Council’s Festivals and Events team

- Developing a set design, sourcing materials, and managing delivery and install

- Providing musical direction

- Leading and coordinating all rehearsals (please note that rehearsal venues can be organised by members of the Festivals and Events team)

- Liaising with Council’s Festivals and Events team regarding rehearsal times and venues

- Attending regular meetings with Council’s Festivals and Events team to discuss work in progress in alignment with the agreed timelines.

- Attending regular production meetings with design team and member/s of Council’s Festivals and Events team

- Contributing to the marketing and promotion of the event

- Preparation of printed program content

- Preparation of MC/Narrator’s notes (if required)

- Being available for media calls/interviews/photo shoots and other promotional opportunities as required

- Attending lighting plot and tech rehearsals as required
